Small outdoor ceiling fans-Best Picks

What is a small size for a ceiling fan?

Well, there is no defined size for ‘small’. I consider any ceiling fan having a blade span between 36 inches to 45 inches to be small. Anything below 36 inches is ‘mini’.

What are they good for?

Small outdoor ceiling fans are suitable for areas up to 144 sq.ft. You can use more than one of them if the area is larger, or you can go for a bigger fan. Multiple small size fans are better than larger fans in long, rectangular areas like verandas.

Though small in size, these fans do create as much air movement as some of the larger ones. But the downside is that this performance is limited to a smaller area.

Best small outdoor ceiling fans

The ceiling fans that are to be used outdoors need to be either wet rated or damp rated to withstand the contact with moisture and water. When it comes to the small size category, I am afraid there aren’t many models to choose from.

Here are some of the best small ceiling fans for outdoor areas;

  1. Minka-Aire F593-ORB, Traditional Concept Bronze Hugger
  2. Emerson CF542ORB Veranda
  3. Casablanca Verse
  4. Elf smart ceiling fan
  5. Harbor Breeze Cedar Shoals
  6. Emerson Summer Night

1. Minka-Aire F593-ORB, Traditional Concept Bronze Hugger

The company Minka-Aire produces some of the most energy-efficient outdoor ceiling fans. This model ‘Traditional Concept’ is no different. It can move 4940 CFM of air at the expense of just 49.4 Watts. This means it has an airflow efficiency of around 100CFM/W which is a pretty good score.

As given above, this fan has a blade span of 44 inches. Its blade pitch is 14 degrees, which is slightly more than the normal blade pitch for many fans. This relatively high blade pitch helps the fan to deliver more airflow irrespective of its small size.

This fan is controlled by a wall switch that is included in the package. You can also opt for a remote control. It runs at 3-speeds; 82 RPM being the lowest speed and 200 RPM the highest.

This fan has an integrated light kit that is not detachable. So in case, you don’t want the light, it also comes with a cap with which you can cover the entire light. I really don’t know if the cover is necessary, but since this light cannot be turned off it may attract insects in some outdoor areas, so that’s why it comes with a cap. If you are opting to buy the Minka-Aire fan remote control, it can be used to dim this light in addition to controlling the fan speed.

This is a wet rated fan; it can handle direct contact with water which makes it perfect for open-top outdoor areas.

The fan comes with a lifetime warranty for its motor and a 1-year warranty for all other parts. There is also another model of the same fan with a 52-inch blade span, so in case you need a larger fan that is a good choice as well.

Please note that this fan comes with a hugger/flush mount so it cannot be installed on angled ceilings without using additional accessories.

Here is a good video showing its installation;

2. Emerson CF542ORB Veranda

Emerson Veranda wet rated fan
Emerson Veranda wet rated fan

Emerson’s Veranda is a good ceiling fan suitable for all outdoor areas including those with no roofs. That is because this is a wet rated fan that can withstand long, direct exposure to water. I don’t know why this model is named Veranda even though it is perfect for all sorts of outdoor areas.

This outdoor fan can move 4421 CFM of air when at its highest speed (which is 260 RPM). It has 3-speed settings, with speeds ranging from 100 to 260 RPM. At its highest speed, this fan consumes 53 Watts of electricity. So in terms of airflow efficiency, it scores a good figure (83 CFM/Watt).

Here is a quick overview of the specifications of Emersion Veranda ceiling fan;

Max CFM4421

The pitch of its blades is 13 degrees which is slightly lower than that of the above ceiling fan by Minka Aire. The higher number of blades with a relatively lower blade pitch gives the fan a smooth, noiseless operation. Further comparing with the Minka Aire model, the top speed of ‘Veranda’ is higher but it fails to provide as much air movement due to its smaller blade span.

The Emerson Veranda ceiling fan is a reversible one. It got a small switch on its top which on the toggle will change the direction of the rotation of the fan. This helps in making the room more comfortable in winter seasons.

Though pull-chain operated it can also be controlled with a suitable remote control or a wall switch. You can also install a light kit on this fan.

It comes with a 4.5-inch downrod, and with the right accessories, can be fitted on sloping roofs as well.

The Emerson Veranda comes with a limited lifetime warranty for its motor and a 1-year warranty for all other components.

3. Casablanca Verse

Casablanca is a popular brand known for its stylish line of ceiling fans. The ‘Verse’ model by this company is a 44-inch ceiling fan that can be used indoors as well as outdoors (all outdoor rated fans can be used in indoor areas). It is stylish and looks great with its large-sized light kit. This model is also available without a light kit.

This ceiling fan is similar to the Minka Aire Traditional Concept fan in terms of the number of blades and blade span. But it has a lower blade pitch; 12 degrees.

Here is a quick overview of its specifications;

Max CFM4159
Blade span44 inch
Wet/Damp Ratingdamp-rated
No. of blades3
Pitch of the blade (degrees)12
Blade finishBrushed Nickel
ControlsRemote control
Speeds4
Light kitIncluded
Airflow efficiency (average)78
Motor WarrantyLimited lifetime

Casablanca Verse ceiling fan has a maximum CFM of 4159. It runs in 3-speeds generating an average air movement of 3196 CFM. It consumes an average of 41 Watts of electricity, so the average figure for its airflow efficiency comes to around 78. Both the fan and the light kit are energy efficient and they are both Energy Star rated as well.

For outdoor use, this one isn’t as good as the Minka Aire fan which is both wet rated and delivers more airflow. However, it is aesthetically more appealing (in my opinion) so it is a better choice for indoor settings.

The package comes with a dimmable 16 W LED light kit which can be controlled by the same remote that controls the fan speed. The motor of this fan is reversible but only manually just like all other models above.

Just like all other fans in this category, the Verse fan is covered under a limited lifetime warranty for the motor, and a 1-year warranty for all other components.

4. Elf Smart ceiling fan

This is the only smart outdoor ceiling fan on this list. It is a product made by the popular company Modern Forms which focuses solely on producing smart fans and smart lights.

This smart fan is controlled via a special app created by Modern Farms. It also integrates with all modern smart-assistants like Google Assistant, Amazon Echo, Nest & Ecobee.

Quick overview;

Max CFM5084
Blade span38 inch
Wet/Damp Ratingwet-rated
No. of blades5
Pitch of the blade (degrees)13
Blade finishBronze, Matt white, titanium silver
ControlsDedicated app, smart devices, optional remote control and optional wall switch
Speeds6
Light kitIncluded
Airflow efficiency (average)133
Motor WarrantyLimited lifetime

In addition, you can also control it via an RF wall switch. The operation of its 6-speed, high efficient DC motor is smooth and silent. At its highest speed, it produces a CFM of 5084, and its airflow efficiency is 133CFM/W. Being a DC motor I actually expected the airflow efficiency to be a much higher figure but I think it is owing to the integration of smart technologies that this smart outdoor fan consumes more power.

Speaking of outdoor use, the Elf smart fan is wet-rated so you can use it basically anywhere. Its build is Aluminium which is durable and lightweight (most other outdoor fans have a stainless steel build), and the blades are ABS.

This ceiling fan comes with a high powered LED light kit that can be dimmed on demand. The fan is Wi-Fi cloud enabled so it can be controlled from any corner of the earth. It can be programmed to work at different schedules, and this scheduling can be done for the entire year in one go.

Regarding warranty, this Elf smart ceiling fan comes with a limited lifetime warranty for its motor, a 5-year warranty for the LED light and a 1-year warranty for all other components.

5. Harbor Breeze Cedar Shoals

The Cedar Shoals model by Harbor Breeze has a tropical design with beautiful leaf-like blades. It looks ideal for beach houses and other tropical outdoor areas.

With a blade span of 44 inches this fan delivers 3877 CFM of air at its top speed. It runs in 3 speeds controlled with a pull chain. If you want it to be remote-controlled, you have to install a Harbor Breeze universal remote which is sold separately.

A quick overview of specifications;

Max CFM3877
Blade span44 inch
Wet/Damp Ratingwet-rated
No. of blades5
Pitch of the blade (degrees)13
Blade finishBronze
ControlsPull chain, optional remote control
Speeds3
Light kitIncluded
Airflow efficiency (average)59
Motor WarrantyLimited lifetime

A 2-bulb LED light kit is included in the package but you can install the fan without it.

This is a UL-listed, wet rated fan that is safe to be installed in any type of outdoor area; whether it gets wet or not. Its airflow efficiency, as well as the ability to move air, is a bit disappointing though; I guess they compromised performance for better aesthetics of the blades.

There is nothing much more to discuss this fan, it is just like any other fan in this list but with a different kind of design.

6. Emerson Summer Night

This is another outdoor/indoor fan by Emerson. On first look, I thought this was a wet rated fan (because many wet rated fans look like this) but this is actually a damp rated one. So while it is made for outdoor use it cannot be used in non-covered areas.

The design of the fan is pretty straight forward. It has 5 weather-resistant blades that are built to withstand moisture. The fan doesn’t come with a light kit but it is light kit adaptable.

Specifications;

Max CFM4101
Blade span42 inch
Wet/Damp Ratingdamp-rated
No. of blades5
Pitch of the blade (degrees)12
Blade finishoil rubbed Bronze, white
ControlsPull chain, optional remote control
Speeds3
Light kitAdaptable
Airflow efficiency (highest speed)88
Motor WarrantyLimited 10-year

Spanning a length of 42 inches its blades can move up to 4101 CFM of air. At its highest speed, the fan has an airflow efficiency rating of 88 which is pretty good.

It runs in 3-speeds, and is controlled by a pull chain. You can also control it with a remote control but this needs to be bought and installed separately.

It runs on an AC motor, and it is reversible using a switch on its top side. Switching to reverse mode in winter can save a few bucks on your heating bills. The fan comes with a 3.5-inch downrod. If you need to install this on a sloped roof it is possible with additional mountings.

The motor warranty is a bit disappointing considering the other fans in this range offer limited lifetime warranties. For this model however, for outdoor use, the warranty cover for the motor is only 10-years. But if you are using this fan indoors it will be covered for a lifetime.

Conclusion

Most outdoor ceiling fans irrespective of their blade length share many common features. Therefore it is really hard to compare one fan against others and choose the best. The best approach to buying the best fan suitable for you is by checking the reviews of customers who already bought it before.
